One of the biggest projects of AMURT needs volunteers in Haiti... Who would decline helping Haiti ? Practically none. Volunteers of VSS have become beacons of light in a sea of trouble affected by years of stagnation, economic mismanagement combined with natural calamities typical of third-world countries. The problem: Tite place has a limited watersupply which feeds the villages of Laobe, Figuet, Bonald and Corridon. As water is limited a conflict arose in which the system got destroyed. The first task AMURT took up was to restore and manage the water-supply equitably.
Water storage tanks had to be re-built and pipes repaired over a total length of more than 5 kilometers (3 miles). This program started in August 2005 and is still going on. New wash areas and another storage tank have just been completed (feb. 06')
2.) Bio-sand water filters: Due to shortage of drinking water and pollution, people had to struggle with numerous health problems. The simple method of filtering water through sand that has a biologically active layer which eats up bacteria and sludge, thereby cleaning the water acceptable for drinking for the local population.
3.) Reforestation program: 30-50.000 trees are now ready for transplanting and ongoing...
villagers have been sensitized by an extensive education campaign which proved to be successful. Not only are the people ready to plant fruit trees, but also to help reforest the dry desert land...
4.) Solar ovens: So far 12 ovens have been sponsored by a company in Illinois, but if materials can be obtained, the stoves could be assembled in Haiti itself.
5.) Youth programs: As the young generation does not have any recreational activities Spiritual Sports and Adventurer's Club (SSAC) has taken up the task to start karate classes as well as yoga-sport training.

Recently a boat has been donated which will help us do youth programs on various islands that are plenty around Haiti. Several canoe trip had been organised by Dharma last year with children of the school in Port-au-Prince.

One cannot help noticing that Anse Rouge is the biggest white spot (desert sand) In Haiti. Although it's only 80 miles birds-eye distance from Port-au-Prince, the journey takes anywhere from 6 to 8 hours along dirt roads and mountains via Gonaives. Hopefully we might get a boat to cut the trip down to 2 hours. |
