Projects in India : 1.) Village youth-programs and tournaments: In the birthplace of the idea of Volunteers for Social Service, our projects are numerous. We decided to focus on one of the most impoverished communities in the far western corner of West-Bengal. We first started to build and run pre-schools and then later on we organized youth programs with various ball games such as soccer and volleyball. We also discovered that the native people of the area had developed a stickfighting art and so we are sponsoring an annual competition of all the arts together with ball games.
2.) Busuki land agricultural cooperative: This project consists of a large agricultural undertaking in which we produce much needed grains and vegetables for volunteers who protect villages and our social service centers from hooligans.
3.) Village defence teams: In an area riddled by poverty it is not uncommon that bands of hooligans break into village granaries to steal food and other supplies not hesitating to take people's lives if apprehended. Our volunteers helped organize "neighborhood watches" and train people in martial arts. 4.) Book donations and literacy drive : As a part of assisting the same impoverished community in West-Bengal, we support a university in the making and libraries in the area. We are presently collecting textbooks of all subjects with the help of about ten volunteers from universities and educational institutions in the U.S. The university we sponsor is the Ananda Marga Gurukul to be reached at http://www.gurukul.edu/ 5.) Emergency relief at the time of disaster: The role of VSS is to train and get volunteers ready as it happened during the cyclone in Orissa and the earthquake in Gujrat in collaboration with AMURT and other relief agencies.
